"I love you."
The words whispered out of his mouth soft like silk upon his tongue. The shepherd shifted her head to left, mouthed the same three words and left him standing alone in the woods.
The lab smiled as he dreamed and shifted slightly.
Someone was coming through the woods. A human. A past slave of the shepherd and a current cook. She came into view. Her eyes wide and in her arms a limp black and tan figure. A body. His heart stopped. He ran to the two-legger and lifeless mate. His paw came to her muzzle. There was no warmth to her. She was dead.
She was dead.
"Diego. It was Diego." The human spoke.
Murdered by her own brother.
"No..." the lab twitched and scrunched his brows as he slept.
He took his wife's body into his arms. He howled. A hauntingly sad note lifted over the camp. Nobody said a word as he carried the shepherd out of camp. He took her to the manor and that very night dug a hole and buried her in the family graveyard.
Revenge. It was not a prideful moment. He left the new grave. He found the male shepherd. He was rummaging through his sister's home. He fought him the old fashioned way. With tooth and claw. He didn't stop until the male's throat was in his jaws. Nothing felt better than to feel the cracking of vertebrae between his canines and to watch the rival take that last gasp of air before passing.
He clenched his teeth. His muscles tightened.
"How often do you visit her grave in a day?"
The all too familiar voice taunted him from outside the high gates of the Adena property. The lab was still limping and carrying his battle wounds from several days before.
"What do you want with me Scotch?" he demanded the tan rabbit.
"I want to watch you suffer Adrien. I want the pleasure of knowing that you have hit rock bottom just like I have."
"Go find another hobby. There is nothing I have that you could ever want."
The rabbit followed the dog as he walked from the opposite side of the fence.
"I am broke. I don't have anything anymore. You still have your family's fortune and heirs to take over when you finally keel over. So I am going to dwell in delight over the fact Shimi is dead. It's the highlight of my life my friend. I love to see you in misery."
The hackles rose on the lab as he faced the rabbit on the opposite side of the fence. The rabbit smiled a sadistic grin and pressed himself against the wrought iron bars.
"What must it be like? Huh? First Maxwell kills your parents and grandfather when we were kids. Then you go and befriend that d**nation himself after he saves your ass from a bullet I shot that should have killed you. Then you finally fall in love and she's taken from you."
"You leave me the hell alone. I am not listening to this. If you are done talking than you can leave. You have said enough."
He was reaching his boiling point. He turned and headed towards the manor, trying to ignore the comments of the rabbit when he heard him coming towards him. He turned himself around. Scotch had weaseled his way onto his property. He saw a glimmer of metal from the gun the animal swayed in his paw.
"Get off my property Scotch!"
"And what are you going to do? You've gone soft, Adrien Juane."
"I'll call the cops."
"Might take them a while especially since you killed one of them the other night. I know it was you. Who else would have slaughtered Diego? I'm sure Diego had the same pleasure of killing his sister as you did killing him."
The lab bared his teeth.
"Don't you remember the old days? You weren't a coward then. You didn't have some very *friendly* personty bar owner to preoccupy you either. Odd how things change."
He finally ticked. He dove at the rabbit before he could finish his last sentence. He snatched the gun from him and clicked off the safety, pointing it at the rabbit's head.
"You have been blackmailing me for half my life."
"Shoot me if you want, but what will you tell the cops?"
"And you're the one who trespassed onto my property."
For once the rabbit hadn't thought through his entire plan. Perhaps after going bankrupt his devilish ideas and conniving ways had been altered. He let out a small helpless gasp and the triggered was pulled. Shot in the head. It was over before it began.
He looked down at Scotch. The rabbit looked the same as he did the day they'd met many years ago. Even in death he managed to stare at him with his black eyes as if he were in fact the devil himself.
There were white hairs around Scotch's eyes and face he had never noticed before. Even the paws were becoming like salt and pepper. Like himself the rabbit was coming on in his years. But unlike him, he would not see another sunrise.
He dropped the gun. There was nothing to feel. His worst enemy was dead. His wife was dead. There was nothing to do, but simply move on.
He woke up sweating from his paws. He sat up, took in his surroundings, then put his face into his paws. Shimi had been dead for almost six months. And for six months he had the same nightmares off and on.
He got up and peered outside the tent. It was still dark though he suspected it was in fact morning. Everyone seemed to be still asleep. The dog quietly walked a few yards, trying to get a grip on reality, when he saw Max watching him from a log not too far from his tent.
Adronicus approached him.
"I can't sleep. I try to come back here now and then, but I can't do it anymore."
"Adrien, you've seen more hatred and death than most can fathom."
The use of his birth name caught his attention immediately. Maxwell had never addressed him by anything other than Adronicus.
"Do whatever you need to. If you need to leave the Rebellion, than do so. I have faith in you."
He stood up from the log and left the labrador. Adronicus blinked as he tried to grasp what had been spoken to him, probably the finest words Maxwell would ever speak directly to him. And then he left. His retirement would be in Adena Manor.
